The extended Roaring Fork Valley encompasses almost 100 miles of 12 townships within 3 counties. It is famous for its premier ski resorts, magical mountains and rivers, and world-renowned cultural offerings. Few, however, suspect the underlying struggle to make ends meet for many who live here permanently. The demand for community support is only increasing with the population growth.
Fortunately, the valley is home to a plethora of nonprofits working diligently to address issues of spiraling housing and health care costs and shifting demographics with the attendant language and culture barriers.
In addition, local nonprofits are leading the way in environmental awareness, science education, arts appreciation and performance, interdisciplinary learning, and other life-enhancing programs that gain international attention and praise.
In 2008 through various grantmaking avenues, 314 nonprofit programs (76% of grants serve residents from Aspen to Parachute) received almost $3.8 million. The Community Foundation distributed 63% of its grants from Donor Advised Funds.
